Installation Method 2: Configuration File Method (For Advanced Users)¶
If you're comfortable with technical setup or the GUI method isn't working, you can configure MCPs directly.
Understanding the Configuration File¶
Claude Desktop uses a configuration file (usually called claude_config.json) to manage MCP connections. Think of it as a contact list that tells Claude how to reach different services.
Finding Your Config File¶
Windows:
Mac:
Linux:
Basic Configuration Example¶
Here's what a simple configuration file looks like:
{
"mcpServers": {
"filesystem": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem", "/Users/yourname/Documents"],
"env": {}
},
"gmail": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["@modelcontextprotocol/server-gmail"],
"env": {
"GMAIL_API_KEY": "your_api_key_here"
